The LSIS (UMR CNRS 6168) was set up in 2002 by bringing together research teams from the LIM (FRE N°2246), the
ENSAM of Aix-en-Provence and the DIAM-IUSPIM (UPRES-EA N°2110). The latter was wholly established on the premises
of the Industrial Engineering and IT Department.
Its purpose is to carry out fundamental and theoretic research into IT and automatic control engineering. This
research is mainly based on the Design and Analysis of Artificial Systems.
The type of research work carried out by the LSIS positions it quite naturally in the STIC (Sciences and Technologies
of Information and Communication) department of the CNRS.
The research work comes wholly within two of the four disciplinary research areas of the STIC department.
IT and information processing field : Information, representation, access and intelligent processing.
System fields and components : automatic control engineering, modelling, observation, command and monitoring of systems.
Two COSI teams (Command and Simulation) and two INCOD teams (Information and Shared Knowledge) participate in the
development of Research into Automated Manufacturing Engineering and IT. They also take an active part in teaching
Industrial Engineering and IT.

The LSIS currently has a staff of around 100 (including 20 persons in the GII Department) and 40 doctoral students.
Between 1997 and 2000, it produced more than 378 publications or communications, 47 theses and 7 HDRs (Research
Authorisations).
Over the years, the LSIS teams have established Industrial Relations which have been put in concrete form through
contracts, and the financing of theses and patents. The LSIS is the main laboratory of the MCAO (Modelling and Design
of Assisted Processes) DEA and the IT DEA (post-graduate degree). The two DEAs of Aix-Marseilles University belong to
the Doctoral School of "Mathematics and Information Technology".
