The departmental lecturers - researchers participated in setting up the Provence Materials and Microelectronic Laboratory in 2000 (L2MP UMR CNRS 6137). This UMR CNRS, which has a staff of 144 persons, is established on several sites, including the Microelectronic and Telecommunications Department of Polytech'Marseille. The research work of the L2MP - Polytech team mainly involves physics and the modelling of technological objects, with a view to their integration in integrated circuits and systems, enabling the material processing of information. The targeted applications are mainly situated in the field of Telecommunications. This research team also includes lecturers - researchers from Aix-Marseille III University. The school currently has 20 lecturers - researchers, 2 ITAs and 13 doctoral students. This forms the microelectronic research centre of the school. Our objective is to combine academic research with research under contract into a single procedure. The researchers who are involved in national and European research projects take an active part in several concerted actions and are involved in important thematic networks set up by the STIC (Sciences and Technologies of Information and Communication) department of the CNRS. The transfer of know-how is assured via several contracts and close industrial collaboration. The lecturers - researchers of the microelectronic centre also took an active part in setting up the Micro and Nanoelectronic option of the "Complex Systems" DEA (Post-Graduate Diploma) of Aix-Marseilles I University ("Physics, Mechanics and Modelling" Doctoral School) and were involved in setting up the PACA regional centre of the National Committee for Microelectronic Training (CNFM). Our action involves optimising microelectronic training courses in the PACA region (south-eastern France) in the areas of both introductory training and training through research.

The researchers of the Microelectronic Centre also use the resources of the Joint Centre for Microwave Resources (CCRM). This centre, which is located within the Mechanics and Energetics department, is supervised by the lecturers - researchers of the MT department and members of the Fresnel Institute (UMR CNRS 6133). They carry out research work at the Fresnel Institute in the TEM team (Teledetection and Microwave Experimentation). Furthermore, three other lecturers - researchers from the MT department carry out research work in the Acoustic Modelling Laboratory (LMA UPR CNRS 7051).

Over the last 4 years, the lecturers - researchers of the department have produced 20 thesis and more than 150 publications and communications. They have also produced thirty or so feasibility study agreements. Their work is held in high esteem by the national and international scientific community and by the industrial world.

Research is based on three main areas :
. The reactivity and dynamics of interfaces (led by P. Gas)
. Systems with low dimensionality (led by A. Stepanov)
. Microelectronics (led by R. Bouchakour)

The reactivity and dynamics of interfaces

. The interfacial reactivity and synthesis of submicronic materials
. Modes and forms of growth
. The transport of material on a nanometric scale: experiments and simulations
. Nanostructures and surface devices

Systems with low dimensionality

. Magnetic properties and resonance
. Electronic properties: modelling and digital calculation
. Thin layer ferroelectrics

Microelectronics

. Multilayer alternative dielectrics and ferroelectrics
. Advanced MOS devices and reliability
. Designing, testing and characterisation of integrated circuits
. Integrated sensors and microsensors
