Background

The objective of setting up an engineering school of sufficient size to be educationally efficient, and to assert itself on a regional, national and international scale, led the three existing schools (ICF, IUSPIM, IUSTI) to request a merger into a Polytechnic University Centre. The resulting centre was christened the Marseilles Polytechnic University School (Ecole Polytechnique Universitaire de Marseille).

This new school, which is part of Aix Marseille I University, was created by the May 14th, 2001 Decree.

The Marseilles Polytechnic University School (Polytech'Marseille) was thus set up, bringing together :
. The Charles Fabry Institute (ICF), which was set up at Aix-Marseille I University in 1983. This has become the Microelectronic and Telecommunications Department.
. The Marseilles University Institute of Engineering Sciences (IUSPIM), which was set up at the Aix-Marseille III University in 1985. This has become the Industrial Engineering and IT Department.
. The University Institute of Industrial Thermal Systems (IUSTI), which was set up at Aix-Marseille I University in 1986. This has become the Mechanics - Energetics Department.



Key dates

. 1985 : creation of the Institut Universitaire des Sciences pour l'Ingénieur de Marseille (IUSPIM), at Aix Marseille 3 University.

. 1986 : creation of the Institut Universitaire des Systèmes Thermiques Industriels (IUSTI), at Aix Marseille 1 University.

. 1993 : creation of the Institut Charles Fabry (ICF), at Aix Marseille 1 University.

. December 2000 : signature of the 2000-2003 four-year contract integrating the merger project of the 3 Marseilles schools.

. April 2001 : The decree establishing the Ecole Polytechnique Universitaire de Marseille appears in the official journal.

. September 2001 : The first official term of the Ecole Polytechnique Universitaire de Marseille begins.
